On 18 December 2025, Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria and Aurubis AG formalized the previously communicated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a long-term copper concentrate offtake agreement during a signing ceremony at the Swedish Embassy in Berlin. This milestone marks a significant step toward securing sustainable copper for Europe.

The agreement underscores the strategic importance of copper as a critical raw material for electrification, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. Aurubis, a leading global supplier of non-ferrous metals, and Viscaria, a Swedish mining company, strengthen with this partnership the supply of reliable and responsible produced copper for the European industry.

Jörgen Olsson, CEO of Viscaria, emphasized the broader impact of the agreement: “This partnership goes beyond copper. We are building resilience for Europe’s industries by supplying responsibly produced copper from Sweden, contributing to reduce dependency on imports and secure access to critical raw materials for the future. Our collaboration with Aurubis demonstrates the importance of cross-border cooperation in strengthening Europe’s supply chain security through sustainably produced copper.”

Copper is essential for electrification, data center and national sovereignty. Today we confirmed that Aurubis and Viscaria share the same values — building a partnership from 2027 onwards with a clear focus on sustainability. For sustainable growth, we absolutely need more mines, also in Europe.

The ceremony was attended by Stefan Rouenhoff, Parliamentary State Secretary at Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, who noted: ”By supporting a stable and reliable supply of copper, Aurubis and Viscaria make an important contribution to strengthening economic resilience in Europe - crucial for both the energy and digital transitions.”

Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Swedish Ambassador to Germany, added: Metals are of high geopolitical relevance and are important for Sweden’s and Europe’s continued prosperity, and also of a particular importance for the defense sector. With a long history of mining and metal refining, Sweden wants to remain at the forefront in innovation-driven and environmentally sustainable mining practices.

The offtake agreement is expected to cover approximately 50 percent of Viscaria’s projected copper output over an eight-year period (2028–2035) with the option to extend. As Viscaria advances toward production, both companies will work closely to integrate volumes into Aurubis’ supply chain, setting a benchmark for sustainable copper production in Europe.
