Aurubis Richmond - Het Verhaal

"It’s a unique experience to help build the first secondary smelter in the United States."

Marc Van den Eynde and Jef Lenaerts worked for many years at Aurubis Olen and in 2024 were assigned to Aurubis Richmond, our new secondary smelter in the United States. They bring their knowledge of furnaces and engineering, actively contribute to production processes, and develop themselves professionally within an international Aurubis context.

> Tell us, Marc & Jef. How did you get started at Aurubis Richmond?
Marc: When Aurubis Richmond was looking for colleagues with furnace experience, I was quickly convinced. It was a unique opportunity to apply my knowledge in an international context. At Aurubis Olen, I started in the Bars & Profiles production department, then in Contimelt production department (foundry), and later as a mechanic. At Richmond, as Team Lead Production, I’m responsible for the MHS system - the furnace feed system - and coordinate testing with the team on the floor.

Jef: For me, it was clear right away too. As a Commissioning Engineer, I can use my experience in furnaces and engineering in a completely new environment and challenge. In Olen, I worked in Engineering and gained experience in Contimelt production department. At Aurubis Richmond, I oversee the startup of new installations, like the copper cast unit and the slag furnace, ensuring that processes become fully operational. It’s amazing to see an idea on paper come to life.

> Which knowledge from Aurubis Olen has been most useful?
Marc
: My experience with furnaces and electromechanics was crucial. That foundation helps me understand and operate the MHS system safely and efficiently.

Jef: My knowledge of furnaces and engineering helps get processes up and running and allows me to adjust them. It’s very satisfying to see the processes actually in action.

> What have you learned professionally so far?
Marc: Safety remains the top priority, just like at Aurubis Olen. I’ve completed the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) training, among other things, and I continue learning every day how to operate systems safely.

Jef: At Aurubis Richmond, I can fully apply my experience while continuing to develop myself. Every day I gain new insights by working with colleagues from different countries. This allows me to view the processes from a broader perspective.

> What has been the highlight of your career at Aurubis Richmond?
MarcFor me, the highlight is being able to apply my knowledge to a completely new installation. It’s incredible to help build something entirely new in the United States.

Jef:  The first melt was a major milestone for me. It was the moment when everything we had built came to life. It’s very rewarding and makes me proud to know that our work supports the first secondary smelter in the U.S.

> How do you experience life in the United States?
Marc: On weekends, I often go offroad in my 4x4, hike, or enjoy nature. I’ve already visited 31 of the 50 states! I also try to bring a bit of Belgian culture here: sometimes I make fried snacks like “curryworst” and “sitosticks” for American friends and colleagues, and they love it (laughs). In the meantime, I’m learning guitar and attending open mic nights. The music here is amazing.

Jef: I live in North Augusta, close to the Savannah River. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, visiting national parks, and exploring cities. I also have a strong interest in history: I regularly visit Civil War battlefields and cemeteries, as well as military-related museums such as Army, Navy, and Air Force museums. In addition, I frequently take part in local charity events, such as walking races. For me, this position at Aurubis Richmond is a unique opportunity to combine work and adventure while learning in an international context.
