> Tell us, Vera. How did you start working as a Draftsperson/Archivist at Aurubis Olen?
I have been drawing since I was very young. At school I often made caricatures of teachers, and later I followed a technical education program in Antwerp. My father also taught technical drawing, so it was somewhat in the family.
After several jobs in industry, I ended up at Aurubis Olen. What immediately appealed to me here is that I can combine my creativity with technology. That really makes the job perfect for me!
> What exactly does your job involve and what does a typical workday look like?
My work revolves around mapping installations and processes, ranging from production processes to compressed air systems. I usually start by observing, sketching, and taking photos so that I can fully understand the process.
After that, I create an ISO drawing, a kind of 3D overview showing how everything is connected.
Then I develop this into P&ID plans. P&ID stands for Piping and Instrumentation Diagram, which is a detailed schematic representation of pipes, instruments, and machines. It shows exactly how components are connected and how the process works. Accurate technical drawings are essential for the safe and efficient operation of our processes and installations.
> What do you enjoy about your job?
We have a great and welcoming team where I feel completely at home.
I also appreciate the freedom I get. In addition to the technical guidelines, I have room to add my own creative touch by helping to think about the best and clearest way to present things.
It gives me satisfaction to know that my work has an impact on the daily operations of the company. That makes it truly meaningful.
> What makes you enjoy working at Aurubis Olen?
At Aurubis, I can combine my talents, grow in my profession, and contribute to the company’s operations.
I can work independently while also being part of a team that supports each other.
> Which qualities are important in your job?
Accuracy is the most important one. Everything must be drawn clearly and in an orderly way.
In addition, spatial insight is crucial: you need to visualize how installations are structured and how components work together.
Technical insight is also helpful, especially when learning new software and processes.
And not being afraid of heights is useful (laughs), because some installations are located at height and you often have to make sketches on-site. When working at height, additional safety measures apply so that you can always work safely. Safety is our top priority.
> What do you do in your free time?
At home I live on a farm with donkeys, sheep, peacocks, and about 70 chickens. That requires quite a bit of time and organization, but I enjoy working outdoors and find it relaxing to take care of the animals.
It helps me stay refreshed and energized, which feels especially good after an intensive workday.
