> You work as an Environmental Expert at Aurubis Beerse. What exactly does your role involve?

As an Environmental Expert, I help oversee the company’s environmental performance. I analyze the results of environmental measurements and identify opportunities to further optimize our processes. I also support our Environmental Manager by reviewing reports and flagging important points for attention.

In addition, I am involved in larger internal projects where we assess the impact of our operations on the surrounding environment, such as noise, odour, and dust, and translate these findings into environmental permit applications.

> How would you describe the working atmosphere?

The working atmosphere is positive, and there is a strong focus on safety. You notice this every day in the way we work together. We are also continuously evolving in terms of safety and sustainability through new installations and projects. There is a clear sense of progress within the company.

The work-life balance is excellent as well. I work within a flexible schedule and have the opportunity to work from home one day per week.

> What does a typical workday look like for you?

I usually start my day by reviewing environmental performance data. These figures are shared daily in a report, allowing us to quickly detect deviations in our processes and take action when needed.

Throughout the day, I mainly focus on monitoring emissions and dust levels. I check whether environmental measures are being correctly implemented across the site and make adjustments where necessary.

There are also recurring tasks, such as internal audits, reporting activities, and monthly site inspections. The combination of analysis, collaboration, and fieldwork means that no two days are the same, which keeps my job interesting.

> Which skills are most important in your role?

Analytical thinking and attention to detail are essential. You need to be able to interpret data correctly and identify connections between different factors.

Collaboration is equally important. I work closely with various departments and external partners on a daily basis. I find the exchange of expertise and insights particularly rewarding.

> What gives you the most satisfaction in your job?

Mainly the variety and the challenge. You never know exactly what the day will bring, and that keeps things interesting.

It is also very rewarding when something you have worked on for a long time delivers tangible results. For projects related to odour or emissions, for example, it is satisfying to see that our efforts genuinely make a difference.

> Who are you outside of work?

In my free time, I spend a lot of time with animals. At home, we have sheep, dogs, and cats, as well as birds of prey. The birds of prey are housed in a private zoo in Wallonia, so they require quite a bit of attention.

Any time I have left is usually spent exercising, swimming, or enjoying time with my family.
