Lieto Church Renovation and Extension by Architecturestudio NOAN
Lieto Church Extension
The Nordic Brown façade ties the extension into the overall composition of the church, adding a new layer to its long architectural history.
The renovation and extension of the over 550-year-old medieval stone church in Lieto represents a rare precedent in Finnish architectural heritage. Medieval stone churches in Finland have not been extended for more than a century.
The extension, known as the Bread Room, is located at the northeast corner of the church and connects to the historic structure through a glazed intermediate space. The new addition provides a gathering and community space for the parish.
The façade of the Bread Room is clad in Nordic Brown copper, whose dark surface forms a subtle contrast with the light stone walls of the medieval church. The material gives the extension a calm and timeless expression.
In scale and form, the new addition follows the adjacent sacristy, integrating naturally with the historic structure while clearly expressing a contemporary architectural layer. The Nordic Brown façade ties the extension into the overall composition of the church, adding a new layer to its long architectural history.
