Prysmian and Aurubis deepen strategic partnership with landmark long-term copper agreement
Hamburg/Milan | Wednesday, September 23, 2026
- Largest agreement between Prysmian and Aurubis
- Long-term partnership strengthens access to lower-carbon, increasingly circular copper
- Agreement supports European supply security as demand accelerates due to electrification, energy infrastructure and AI
Prysmian and Aurubis have signed a landmark long-term agreement for the supply of copper wire rod, deepening a strategic partnership spanning more than 30 years.
The agreement represents a significant step in securing one of the critical materials underpinning electrification, the energy transition, and digitalization. As copper demand grows, driven by the expansion of power grids, renewable energy, electrification and AI infrastructure, the agreement will enhance Europe’s production footprint, recycling capabilities and low-carbon copper rod and cable production.
Alberto Boffelli, Chief Operating Officer at Prysmian, said: “As the world’s largest buyer of copper wire rod, Prysmian has both an opportunity and a responsibility to help shape the future of the copper value chain. This agreement with Aurubis gives us the reliable, flexible and increasingly sustainable supply our customers need, while strengthening Europe’s access to a material that is critical to its energy and digital future.”
As Europe’s largest vertically integrated low-carbon copper rod producer, Aurubis combines scale, quality and security of supply. The company currently produces copper wire rod with approximately 36% recycled material content and a carbon footprint significantly below the global industry average. Its four copper rod plants across Europe also provide Prysmian with flexibility and proximity to key markets.
“This agreement is another milestone in our long-standing strategic partnership with Prysmian,” said Toralf Haag, CEO of Aurubis. “As the largest contract signed between our two companies, it demonstrates the trust and mutual commitment that have characterized our relationship for more than 30 years.”

Advancing more sustainable value chains
Prysmian and Aurubis share an ambition to advance electrification, the energy transition and digitalization through more sustainable value chains.
Prysmian is working to set best-in-class sustainability through its products and supply chain, while Aurubis contributes copper wire rod with an increasing share of recycled material and a carbon footprint significantly below the global average for comparable products.
All Aurubis rod mills have been awarded The Copper Mark, the leading independent assurance framework for responsible copper production, sourcing and recycling. Prysmian is also a member of The Copper Mark.
Together, the companies bring advanced recycling expertise, ambitious decarbonization efforts and high standards across the value chain to help meet growing demand for critical materials.
Strengthening Europe’s copper supply chain
The agreement helps secure the materials needed for electrification, energy infrastructure and digital networks, while supporting Europe’s long-term industrial competitiveness.
“Together, our four rod plants in Europe, our strong sustainability performance – in line with our Tomorrow Metals promise – and our long-standing partnership with key customers such as Prysmian demonstrate how resilient European value chains can create value and support the continent’s industrial competitiveness,” said Martin Sjoberg, SVP Commercial at Aurubis.
