Sulfuric Acid

With an output of more than 2 million t, Aurubis is one of the largest producers and an important supplier to the global market.

Aurubis sulfuric acid is produced in our plants in Hamburg, Germany and Pirdop, Bulgaria. In Hamburg we also produce oleum with a strength of approx. 25 % free SO 3.

Sulfuric acid is used in almost all industrial sectors. Typical areas of application are in the production of fertilizers and pigments as well as metal ore leaching. In addition, sulfuric acid is used extensively in the chemical industry, whether in fiber production, hydrofluoric acid production, chlorine drying or one of many other applications.

Our customers appreciate our remarkably high degree of supply security.
Because our production plants are equipped with extensive cleaning facilities, our products are regarded as being among the best available qualities.

For particularly quality-conscious customers who specifically require low mercury levels, our premium quality produced at our Hamburg plant with the use of additional cleaning processes is a very attractive option.

We produce all sulfuric acid qualities with strengths between 94 % and 98 % H 2SO 4, typically approx. 96 % H 2SO 4

The quality of the sulfuric acid is currently being monitored. Aurubis’ documented Quality Management System for production and marketing corresponds with the standards of DIN EN ISO 9001:2015. It was certified by TÜV Nord. An independent Quality Control Department at Aurubis monitors compliance with the requirements.
Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies in order to ensure constant and efficient quality control.

Excellent service requires optimal logistics

Hamburg site

The total storage capacity of the sulfuric acid tanks at our plant and our terminal at VOPAK Terminal GmbH in deep water in Hamburg’s harbor amounts to about 105,000 t.

We have more than a dozen separate tanks at our disposal, ensuring that different qualities can be stored at the same time in large quantities. In this way we are able to offer an extraordinary degree of flexibility in delivery.

Seagoing and inland waterway vessels of all standard sizes can be loaded quickly and safely at any time. This also applies to orders at very short notice.

In addition, the logistically excellent location of our plant offers every advantage for tank wagons and truck deliveries.

Pirdop site

In Bulgaria we also have a large storage capacity of approx. 75,000 t. Since our production site is in the middle of the country, these tanks are located in two different places.

In our plant in Pirdop we have a total capacity of approx 40,000 t at our disposal. We use these tanks to facilitate rail and truck deliveries for our customers.

We also supply our second site with sulfuric acid from these tanks. More than 300 tank wagons as well as locomotives reserved for these transports enable us to move our acid quickly and flexibly in block trains to the first privately owned terminal for liquid chemicals in the Black Sea region, which is located in the port of Varna West and operated by Oiltanking Bulgaria AD. At this facility we have three tanks with a capacity of almost 35,000 t available exclusively to us. This enables us to load ships of any conventional size for our regional and global customers quickly and smoothly.
