Copper on Account

The concept of Copper on Account, sometimes also known as "Beistellungen" or "Wandelkupfer", has a long tradition at Aurubis AG, having its origin in the 1940s.

Shortly after World War II, the business model of Wandelkupfer was born. Financially strong companies hedged the copper, which was used by their suppliers to produce and deliver cable, strip, etc., with Norddeutsche Affinerie (since 2009 Aurubis AG). These companies then placed the copper at their suppliers’ disposal so that they could buy the necessary pre-product such as copper wire rod, billets, slabs, etc. at Aurubis – without paying for the copper, just the fabrication costs of the Aurubis copper products.

Even if the company setting aside the copper does not know at the time of copper price fixation to which of its suppliers it will make the copper available, it can cover the copper positions and decide later on. Releasing the copper to the company’s supplier requires just a simple booking on the metal accounts at Aurubis AG – comparable to a bank account transfer.

These days, not only big corporations use the Wandelkupfer service at Aurubis AG. Smaller and medium-sized companies also prefer the system of hedging their copper demand with Aurubis AG – one of the biggest copper producers worldwide – because of several aspects such as risk management, flexibility, and supply security.
