Raw Material Purchasing

Apart from copper concentrates, Aurubis also procures recycling materials as raw materials for copper and metal production. We provide a broad processing portfolio.

In addition to processing copper concentrates, recycling copper scrap, alloy scrap and other recycling materials is a central business activity in copper production at Aurubis. Raw material purchasing is managed centrally by Aurubis AG’s Supply Chain Management.

State-of-the-art recycling technologies

Aurubis efficiently processes a variety of recycling raw materials and recovers the individual metals in an environmentally sound manner that conserves resources with state-of-the-art recycling technologies. About 700,000 t of recycling raw materials of varying qualities and compositions are processed annually in our facilities.

1. Metal recycling at Aurubis

Recycling at Aurubis starts with a reliable acceptance and assessment of the material, which includes precise chemical analysis, preparation and pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing. It ends with the fabrication of high-quality products.

We process the following materials:

  • Aluminum-bronze
  • Bare wire scrap
  • Lead scrap
  • Precious metal-bearing copper scrap
  • Electronic scrap
  • Copper and aluminum cable scrap
  • Copper-lead granules
  • Copper-iron material
  • Copper granules
  • Copper-bearing residues
  • Copper-brass radiators
  • Copper refining material
  • Copper remelting blocks
  • Printed circuit boards
  • Materials from the waste management industry
  • Brass refining material
  • Metal hydroxide slimes, foundry sands, catalysts
  • Non-ferrous metal shredders
  • Red brass refining material
  • Tin/lead-bearing recycling raw materials

2. Precious metal-bearing secondary raw materials

In addition to the classic recycling materials, Aurubis can recover precious metals from a number of other raw materials as well.

The appearance of the materials can be just as varied as their origin. Thanks to our wide range of applications and intensive impurity management, Aurubis can use a diverse range of materials as input. Even materials with small precious metal contents can be processed efficiently. As a result, there are hardly any materials that Aurubis can’t process.

We process the following materials:

  • Bullion
  • Skimmings
  • Catalysts
  • Slimes
  • Slags
  • Wire
  • Doré
  • Stamping waste, including ceramic
  • Ashes
  • Contacts

Processing procedure

The materials are collected at Aurubis after a thorough receiving inspection and their data is processed and documented. All of the materials are assigned an individual batch number and can therefore be consistently tracked from receipt to invoicing. The gross and net weights are determined using precision scales.

Aurubis employs excellently trained sampling specialists and uses state-of-the-art equipment at the sites. From the first process step to final preparation, the staff works with great care and precision to obtain a representative sample. The samples are analyzed in internal company laboratories.

With its wide range of facilities, Aurubis offers a comprehensive solution that conserves resources, returning metals to the cycle that would otherwise be lost.

Customer relationships based on trust

Deliveries of raw materials, especially those containing high levels of precious metals, require mutual trust. Long-term, cooperative business relationships confirm that we live up to this expectation.

However, not only our suppliers’ demands are high, but our own as well. This is especially true when it comes to reliability, confidentiality, efficiency, exchanging information and of course environmental protection.

Furthermore, we provide specialist support in all relevant issues with our Environmental Protection and Logistics departments.
Aurubis’ customers include metal traders, large industrial enterprises, regional firms and waste management companies.
