Metal Production from Concentrates

Aurubis sources ore concentrates from around the world to produce high-purity copper. The copper concentrates are used within the Aurubis Group in Hamburg and Pirdop.

Aurubis imports most of the copper concentrates directly from copper mines in different countries. Copper ore is primarily mined in Central and South America, the US and Canada, as well as Africa, Asia, Australia and to a lesser degree in Europe.

Copper ores contain about 0.5-4 % copper and are already processed into a concentrate in the mine. The concentrate is a finely milled, dark gray material containing about 30 % copper (Cu), 30 % iron (Fe) and 30 % sulfur (S). The concentrate also often contains small amounts of precious metals and a range of other elements, which we process in the smelters.

There has been a noticeable trend towards falling copper content and increasing complexity in the copper ores for several years. Aurubis is in a position to process these ores as well, producing metals such as silver and gold, in addition to high-purity copper.
