Ore from all over the world
Copper ore is mainly mined in Central and South America, the United States of America, Canada, but also in Africa, Asia, Australia and to a lesser degree in Europe.
The copper ore (copper content 0.5 – 4%) is already processed in the mine to a concentrate which on average contains about
- 30 % copper (Cu)
- 30 % iron (Fe)
- 30 % sulphur (S).
Aurubis procures copper concentrates largely under long-term supply agreements, which are concluded direct with the mines. The remaining requirements are covered by using opportunities on the spot market.
The copper concentrates are delivered to Aurubis from the countries of origin via the Elbe port in Brunsbuttel. A specially developed crane facility ensures dust-free, environmentally friendly delivery of the material. We take a representative sample from a weighing bunker which is then analysed in detailed by the chemists in our main laboratory. Particular care must be taken since the metal contents determined form the basis for the calculations with the suppliers. As a smelter without its own mines, Aurubis pays the raw materials in accordance with the respective price for refined metals on the metal exchanges less a treatment and refining charge.
In Pirdop the copper concentrates reach their destination via the port of Burgas, from which they are then conveyed by rail to the smelter.
