Education

We are particularly proud of our projects in the educational sector. We support in particular the Hamburg districts of Veddel, Wilhelmsburg and Rothenburgsort in our neighbourhood. Thus, we have developed the “Work Experience Days” and “9-Plus” projects with the Slomanstieg School in Veddel. The school, which teaches children with more than 30 different nationalities, prepares its pupils intensively for their subsequent working life. The schoolchildren from the eighth class come to Aurubis one day a week as part of the work experience days to gather their first practical experience.
The school has, however, discovered that only about 10 % of those pupils who complete their secondary education successfully, find an apprenticeship.
This is where the 9-Plus Project takes effect. This programme which is unique in Hamburg or even in Germany has the aim of giving the youngsters training for their working life and offering them realistic prospects of finding an apprenticeship.
School-leavers who have completed their secondary education but have not found an apprenticeship have had the possibility since August 2007 of receiving targeted instruction as part of the 9-Plus project.
The young people are prepared for a year at Aurubis for an apprenticeship in a trade. They are allocated places in the sector of their choice as far as possible and work for three days a week in the production sector, while still going to school for two days, where they receive further instruction for their chosen trade.
It is motivating for future school-leavers, a success for the school and the Group, that 10 of the 12 project participants from the year 2007/08 could be accepted for apprenticeships at Aurubis.
Every two years, the technical university day is still organised in Hamburg in order to envourage young people to take technical degrees. The events in the past were presented by Ranga Yogeshwar; works tours, presentations and discussion panels are organised.
Events such as the „Language Camp“ or „Youth thinks to the future“ are also regularly supported.
Youth work is also performed at our site in Lunen, where grants for foreign language courses abroad have been given to Lunen schoolchildren for more than 20 years now.
In Bulgaria schools and universities are regularly provided with teaching equipment and grants given to students.
